On a sad note, a passing:                     (Aciu, JP)

Along with my brother, Algis, and sister, Ruta, I would like to share
with the Montreal Lithuanian Community the sad news of the passing of
our father, Stasys Jaugelis, with the following obituary.

It is our understanding that there is no longer a Lithuanian print
publication such as Nepriklausoma Lietuva in Montreal. I have been
following the posts on Montrealio Lietuviai for some time, and it
seemed the best point of contact with our old friends and
acquaintances. Please pass this on as you see fit to the Lithuanian
Community and congregation of Ausros Vartai.

Sincerely,

Rita (Jaugelis) Haydar

April 28, 1922 to March 22, 2010
With great sadness we announce the passing of Stasys (Stanley)
Jaugelis in Delta, B.C. Predeceased by his wife Aldona and sisters Ona
and Juze, he is lovingly remembered by his son Algis (Vida), daughters
Ruta (Jim) and Rita (Simon), grandchildren Nicolas, Sophie, Laila,
Ona, Tomas and Kristina (Giovanni) with great-granddaughter Marina.
Born in Kedainiai, Lithuania, with aspirations of aeronautical
engineering interrupted by the uncertainties of war, he eventually
brought his parents to safety in Canada following a sojourn in Germany
where he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University
of Hanover. From the gold mines of northern Ontario to a successful
engineering career, notably with Union Carbide in Montreal and
Ontario, his design and construction talents extended to a treasured
family cottage in the Laurentian Mountains of Quebec, where the
connection with our Lithuanian roots was kept alive with friends and
extended family. He also designed and built a sailboat and many kayaks
throughout his life for friends and family, of which the latest design
continues to be reproduced and enjoyed by others. Frugal with himself,
his generosity with others is remembered and appreciated both here and
in his Lithuanian homeland. Our family appreciates the truly
exceptional care "Papa Stan" received at Delta View Habilitation
Centre, with thanks to all the “special caregivers” who enabled him to
live graciously with the later stages of Alzheimer's Disease. A
Celebration of the Mass for Stan will be held at the Augustine Chapel
at Sacred Heart. A memorial and interment of ashes is being planned to
take place in Montreal over the summer.  "I have fought the good
fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." (IITim. 4:7)

Baltic Students' Society at McGill U. is looking for Lithuanians!
If you know of anyone who could be interested, please read on and call the number below!
Pass the info along....

Hello,

My name is Meghan and I am the Lithuanian Community Representative of
the Baltic Students' Society at McGill University.
BSS is a new club
at McGill seeking to cultivate a forum in which students of the Baltic
heritage and those interested in the Baltics can meet each other and
celebrate Baltic culture. We have Estonian and Latvian members, but
haven't yet found any Lithuanian students at McGill. After Google
searching Lithuanians in Canada, I found the The Lithuanian Canadian
Community website, which lists you as the President of the Montreal
chapter. We were hoping that you could help us contact Lithuanian
students at McGill.
Do you know of any Lithuanians or students
interested in Lithuanian culture at McGill? If not, do you know any
other young Lithuanians in Montreal or anyone who can help us in our
search for Lithuanian students at McGill?
Please feel free to contact
me at this email address balticstudentssociety@ssmu.mcgill.ca
or at 438-888-0426. Similarly, please feel free to forward this email to anyone that may be able to help us.

Thank you,
Meghan Daoust

We have American Idol, Lietuva has 'Choro Karai' (Choir Wars).

Enjoy!

Here are a couple of links from this year's Lithuanian "Choro Karai".  Enjoy!
(Some great choral outfit ideas!)

My personal fave of all the "Lithuanain night" songs:

...and if the second half of this one doesn't have you singing, well (we - MLC -  sang this in Lietuva at Dainu Svente last July)...
